Louis Vuitton has shifted priorities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The French maison will be producing medical gowns for frontline healthcare workers in Paris to help offset the country-wide shortage.

The brand will be transforming five of its ateliers and workshops to produce the medical gowns with all products being donated to staff at six local hospitals that are currently dedicated to treating COVID-19 patients.

The company has enlisted twenty volunteers to help produce thousands of medical gowns and masks with patterns and materials having been approved by the governing hospital bodies to ensure they’re both functional and medical grade. LVMH also noted that the group of volunteers will be working from home to ensure they’re able to practice social distancing.

“We are proud to be able to help healthcare professionals at our level and put our know-how at the disposal of the Hôpitaux de Paris to create gowns for medical staff,” Michael Burke, Louis Vuitton chairman and CEO, said in a press release. “I would like to thank the artisans of our atelier who voluntarily participate in this civic act and who have been bravely applying themselves since this morning to equip healthcare workers in hospitals who are in need of gowns.”

LVMH chief executive Bernard Arnault also halted productions of Dior, Guerlain and Givenchy perfumes to instead produce hydroalcoholic gel hand sanitiser for hospitals across France early last month. While Dior has been making masks for hospital staff since the end of March.

“Thank you to everyone who is doing their part to fight this global pandemic.” the fashion house added in a statement.
