Kwankao Designs For Rado Once Again
“The sun and the moon are like tragic lovers that are rarely seen together,” Kwankao Svetavimala discloses as the inspiration behind Rado DiaMaster Prajun, her latest collaboration with the Swiss watch brand. The two celestial entities are brought together in Rado’s exclusive 2019 collection with the Thai designer under the DiaMaster series.
Back in 2018, Kwankao Svetavimala, founder of eponymous fashion label Kwankao, created a special clothing collection for Rado. The watchmaker has invited the fashion designer back again for another collab, but this time to actually design the timepiece itself.
On the launch of Rado DiaMaster Prajun earlier this month on May 8, Kwankao spoke about her inspiration for watch, which includes the Thai word for "moon"—prajun—in the name. The two most prominent objects in the sky are the sun and the moon. While they are conceptually together, we rarely see them together side by side. To the designer, the sun and the moon are like lovers longing to be together who finally get to with this watch.
Precious materials such as diamond and mother-of-pearl are used to tell the poignant story of the celestial figures. Reflected at certain angles, the thin layer of the white mother-of-pearl makes the dial resemble a gleaming waxing and waning moon, while at other angles the sun and moon are visible. Five diamonds speckled across the dial further intensify the celestial charm. Protecting both the front and the back are sapphire crystals with the Swiss automatic ETA C07 movement exposed through the back. The 35mm case is made of high-technology plasma ceramic with 60 Top-Wesselton diamonds decorating the bezel. Another practical feature of the watch is the Rado EasyClip removable strap—available in various materials including grey or black python-effect calf leather and plasma ceramic.
