The South Korean-born Tottenham Hotspur player talks to Tatler about travel essentials—and a recent trip back home with his teammates

The Tottenham Hotspur player is fronting a new campaign for luxury luggage brand Tumi. Here, he reveals his travel must-haves, what he listens to on long flights—and shares memories of a recent trip back home to South Korea with his teammates.

What are your best packing tips?

Son Heung-min: I tend to pack light because I move around a lot and don’t like to be weighed down with lots of stuff. I keep it simple and only take what I need—usually my [football] kit and some lounge clothes.

I like to keep things organised in my case too, so Tumi packing cubes and shoe bags make it much easier to find things when having I have to pack and unpack so often.

What does your “airport outfit” look like?

SHM: I like simple and comfortable clothes. When traveling long distances, comfort is paramount, but sometimes I want to wear something interesting. In instances like these, I go for colourful pieces and accessories, and complement them with sunglasses and hats.

What’s your travel skincare routine?

SHM: My skincare routine is simple. When I’m on a plane, [the air] can be very dry, so I always pack a moisturiser. Also, sunscreen is always a must when so much of my life is spent outside on a pitch.

Which artists do you often listen to on long journeys?

SHM: I like everything regardless of genre: K-pop, hip-hop or and R&B. Still, the artists that always make my playlist include BTS, Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles and Post Malone. I think I choose the music according to the weather and my mood.

The Tottenham Hotspurs recently travelled to South Korea for pre-season training, and for some of your teammates, it was their first time experiencing Korean culture. Which aspect of your home country were you most excited to share with them?

SHM: I was so touched to have my teammates in South Korea and was really excited to show them how many supporters we have there!  One aspect of the culture that I loved sharing to share with them was the food. It’s such a big part of our culture, and I wanted to fully immerse [my teammates].

It was great to see that a lot of them loved the food. They tried everything from Korean BBQ and seafood pancakes to fried chicken with spicy sauce. I felt like a dad watching his kids eat—it made me happy.

Where is somewhere you haven’t been yet, but would like to go next?

SHM: Hawaii. It would be special to be able to go to such a beautiful place.

Which item from the Tumi Alpha Bravo collection best suits your lifestyle the most?

SHM: I’ve been enjoying using the Alpha Bravo Navigation backpack recently—it has tons of pockets so I can easily fit everything I need, from my computer to training boots. It can also expand, which is great if I have any extra things to carry.

What are your top three essential travel items?

SHM: First and foremost, I need good luggage. My current go-to is from Tumi’s latest fall collection, the Tegra-Lite Continental Expandable 4-wheeled carry-on in T-Graphite. It’s strong, lightweight, has components made from recycled material and has a built-in USB port so I can charge on the go.

When travelling, I like to catch up on TV shows, movies and football videos, so a tablet computer and good earphones or headphones are also a must.
