UK prime minister Rishi Sunak was in the news recently for sporting Adidas Samba. Since everyone (and their prime minister) is wearing this shoe, we bring you five other slimline styles to try if you don’t want to follow in anyone else’s footsteps

When news broke this week that British prime minister Rishi Sunak was spotted wearing the most popular sneakers of the year—the Adidas Samba—the fashion community debated whether it was time to hang them up.

Originally designed in 1949 as a football training shoe to combat icy grounds, the narrow silhouette of the Samba has proven to be the chic alternative to the chunky sneakers trend that dominated the late 2010s, and harking back to the popularity of plimsolls in the 2000s.

If you’re in the market for the style, but don’t want to follow in anyone else’s footsteps, these are five alternative shoes that fit the bill.

1. Adidas Handball Spezial

The Adidas Handball Spezial was made for playing handball on indoor courts in the ’70s, and the slim silhouette, combined with suede finish, make these similar in style to Adidas Samba. The retro athletic feel is prevalent, although there are slight differences as the Spezial features a shorter tongue and thinner laces.

2. Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66

This Japanese sneakers, first made to kit the country’s Olympics team in the mid ’60s, is a cult classic turned fan favourite. The narrow shape, thin sole and signature crossed stripes make for a chic yet casual footwear, and come in a wide range of colours including metallic finishes.

3. Converse Chuck 70

Converse sneakers are synonymous with laidback, skater and grunge styles, despite its origins as a basketball shoe in the ’70s. The low-top variety makes for a classic everyday shoe option as it pairs well with most outfits—and like Adidas Samba, it features a narrow silhouette with an instantly recognisable design.

4. Reebok Club C 85

The Reebok Club C 85 is a later addition to the canon of iconic retro trainers—having been designed in the ’80s—but it doesn’t detract from its wearability and timeless appeal. While it is sightly chunkier for a slimline shoe compared to the others, and doesn’t opt for a gum sole, it still features a narrow toe.

5. Puma Palermo

Puma relaunched its popular ’80s sneakers, the Palermo, last year following the revival of vintage sneakers styles. Created for football playing purposes, this suede style has the Adidas Samba-like gum sole, Puma stripe and comes in an array of playful colours.
