Designer sweaters to flaunt around this festive season

Christmas cheer only happens once a year. Food, gifts and good times are a given in the merry season, but what about wardrobe? That’s right, we’re talking Christmas sweaters. Rather than dusting off an old Christmas knit (especially if it’s home-made), it’s time to get your hands on a stylish version of the classic sweater.

Taking the kitsch and itch out of sweater shopping this season, here are ten not-so-ugly Christmas sweaters to get you in the festive mood:

Kapital

Ditch Rudolph this Christmas for this wildlife sweater from Kapital. Made in Japan using heritage knit methods, the vibrant and colourful intarsia sweater—with bears, a fox and even killer whales printed all-over—comes in a relaxed, comfortable fit so there’s plenty of belly room for post-Christmas dinner stomachs.

Gucci

Swapping out the traditional pullover for something button-down, this Gucci cardigan ticks the Christmas sweater checklist. In red, white, green and black, the luxury knit comes embellished with the Italian label’s iconic motifs: the panther, the snake and quirky ‘Guccy’ logo (but from a distance they look like Christmas trees, gifts wrapped with bows and church bells). Mother of pearl buttoning offers a touch of glitz to this pure-wool cardie.

Balenciaga

Inspired by' 90s après-ski, this Balenciaga sweater will have you looking set for the slopes this Christmas. In cable and rib knit patchwork, the high-neck sweater is cut and sewn using red, blue and other colours, forming a retro geometric print. The billowy raglan sleeves complement the slouchy fit, shaped nicely by an elasticated hemline. Wear zipped up or open at the neck.

Mr. P

It wouldn’t be Christmas without a sweater in Santa red, and Mr. P has released the most luxurious version with a classic crew neck. While cable knits are popular this season—thanks to the Mr Porter brand’s custom-designed cabling—this knit, made from soft cashmere and sturdy wool, will stand out at any festive party.

Acne Studios

The Scandinavians know how to do Christmas right, and Swedish brand Acne Studios has released a festive sweater this season to celebrate its beloved Jul. In a striped jacquard patriotic yellow and blue print, the mix-blend sweater is fitted in design, to be worn as a winter layer under a topcoat or solo as a statement piece.

For the classic gent who simply can’t be seen in a novelty knit, there’s this traditional cable knit from Burberry. In a light cotton and cashmere blend, the luxury sweater sits ultra-cool in chalk white and comes crafted in a regular fit. Buy up a size for a baggier style.

Kent & Curwen

In smoky grey with splashes of burgundy, navy and white, this pure cashmere edition is at the higher-end of sweater luxury when it comes to softness and style. Treat yourself.

Like one of the three wise men, follow the evening star to find this Saint Laurent sweater. The jacquard knit in midnight sky black lights up with gold Lurex stars. Made in Italy with a mohair-esque finish, it’s definitely the most glam Christmas sweater of the season, so be bold and then chuck it on.

Thom Browne

Have a whale of a time with Thom Browne this Christmas. The New York designer’s Fair Isle gingham check sweater is cut within a classic fit with a crew neck and features an illustrated whale print on the front. Made from mohair tweed, the knit colours are American fall-inspired too, adding the traditional yuletide atmosphere. Merry Christmas!
