Naphalai's Diary: October 7-13
I'd like to think I am a law-abiding citizen. I pay my taxes, cross the road only at zebra crossings and stand when the royal anthem is being played at the movie theatre. So it came as a bit of shock to find out I had been driving for the last year without a valid car registration. In my defense, I don't remember when I last renewed my car registration myself as it had always been done by my husband. Two years ago, I bought a new vehicle and the registration was done by the car company. When it came time to renew last year it didn't enter my mind to do it while my husband was under the impression I would take care of it myself—how that male mind of his arrived at that conclusion I have no idea. So that's how I ended driving a car with a lapsed registration of over a year. The fact that I hadn't been pulled over by a policeman shows that either I am a good driver or the police suck at their work—no prizes for guessing which is the right answer.
Anyway other than that, last week was relatively uneventful. Two companies were rather busy holding two events in the same week: Club 21 with the launch of Homme Plissé by Issey Miyake and Commes des Garcons' screening of The Inspiration Inspired by Rei Kawakubo film, while PAT Luxury Group unveiled the Karl Lagerfeld special beauty collection and the new season's looks of Kate Spade.
Karl Lagerfeld Cosmetics
Karl Lagerfeld collaborated with Modelco to launch a limited-edition collection of beauty products for the face, eyes and lips plus accessories. Held at the pop-up store at Siam Paragon, the event was hosted by PAT Luxury's Porndet Chandawanich. He was there again for Kate Spade's presentation of its autumn/winter collection at the Central World branch. The new range highlights colourful animal prints.
Issey Miyake Homme Plisse
I wasn't able to make it to the Commes des Garcons film screening but attended the Homme Plisse presentation at the Issey Miyake store at Siam Discovery. In addition to the new autumn/winter collection, a special Block Series range was introduced specifically for the Thai market. Many male celebrities and stars were there to check out the tops featuring contrasting colours that can be matched according to taste.
Berluti Gets Tattooed
Another men's fashion event was hosted by Pranapda Phornprapha for Berluti, the luxury leather brand at Central Embassy. A tattoo master flew in from Paris to demonstrate the Venezia leather craft of etching pictures on the leather.
Berger 5th Anniversary
Maison Berger Paris meanwhile celebrated five years since Nontakarn Dapparungsi Ng introduced the home fragrance products in Thailand. Held at The Bedroom Company on Chidlom, guests were introduced to the new Immersion lamp collection of interior designer Rozenn Mainguene plus three scents from the Aroma collection based on essential oils and seven other fragrances. The event ended with some music plus singing by the hostess herself.
Siam Kempinski's 9th Anniversary
Also celebrating its anniversary was the Siam Kempinski Bangkok. Now nine years old, the hotel held a cocktail for its clients and friends who were welcomed by its new managing director Richard Schestak. It is located on the grounds of the former Siam InterContinental Hotel, where I worked for almost 10 years in the 80s. Can't believe it's been so long ago.
An Audemars Piguet Lunch
Talking about time, I also joined the Audemars Piguet lunch in honour of CEO Francois-Henry Bennahamias at St Regis. I had met him in Paris for an AP event several years back but didn't get a chance to talk to him then. I did this time and found him to be a very charming man. So charming, in fact, that a big hug from him as I was leaving did not seem out of place at all.
A Lebanese Lunch With Friends
One of my favourite cuisines is Middle Eastern/North African so when I was invited for a lunch at Al Saray Lebanese restaurant I wasn't going to say no. Hostess Kathleen Pokrud had invited some friends to celebrate the birthdays of ML Poomchai Chumbala and Juling Chirathivat. There was a lot of food, with cold appetisers, hot appetisers, soup, lamb briyani and a barbecue platter for each one. This was a case of too much of a good thing, thanks to the generosity of the hostess.
Good Food Needs Good Wine
Catena Zapata is a winery in Argentina which produces wines that have garnered 100 points from critics. At a lunch at The House on Sathorn organised by importer IWS, Asia Pacific brand ambassador Tamara Amaya introduced an Alamos chardonnay, Catena malbec and two Adrianna Vineyard malbecs. I usually find that New World red wines tend to be full bodied with strong tannins—not my faves—but the ones served were light and easy to drink and actually enjoyable with the Thai dishes served.
A Taste Of Italy At Marriott Hotels
Finally, a dinner organised by Marriott hotels as part of its Stars of Italy promotion. Five Italian celebrity chefs had been flown with each one acting as a guest chef at Bangkok Marriott Sukhumvit, The Athenee, Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong, Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit and Royal Orchid Sheraton. Italian ambassador HE Laurenzo Galanti attended the opening which was a dinner at Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit’s Rossini prepared by all five chefs at the same time.
