Naphalai's Diary: June 24-30
Bangkok may be a very busy city as far as events and parties go, but most of them tend to be small affairs, and often quite commercial. There used to be more grand gala dinners but nowadays they are quite few and far between, the regular ones interestingly being those hosted by society and fashion publications such as Vogue, Hello and, of course, Thailand Tatler. However last week there were two gala dinners.
The first was the V Gala hosted by celebrity designer Vatanika Patamasingha to support UN Women. Named a UN Women Champion recently, she is using her star power to raise funds for women in need around the world. An exclusive and elegant crowd gathered at the Rosewood Bangkok to honour the first three donors to the cause: Pranapda Pornprapha, Mandy Yu and Gemma Hirano. The black-tie event featured performances by singer Duangporn Pongpasuk, violinist Paye Srinarong and jazz saxophonist Sekpol Unsamran, better known as Koh Mr Saxman.
Zodiac of Star
The other was Zodiac of Star at Siam Kempinski to highlight the dazzling creations of 17 jewellers at Siam Paragon. The designers/owners of each company were on hand together with the luxury mall's management led by Supaluck Umpujh to welcome guests who were able to appreciate the creations worth over a billion baht displayed during cocktails. After dinner, during which diva Wichayanee Pearklin entertained, there was a spectacular fashion show with top models showing off the pieces.
Launch of M Cohen
Another jewellery event but on a very much smaller scale was the launch of M Cohen at St Regis. This is a unisex brand from Los Angeles whose signature is a layering design technique that encourages mix and match styling. For distributors Trinupab Jiratritarn and Tanapat Leelaplib of Cobalt International, which imports eyewear brands, this is the first time they are branching out into these accessories.
Prada Fall/Winter 2019
Fashion was also quite active last week, with Prada unveiling its fall/winter 2019 collection. The Prada press presentations are normally held at its office at Gaysorn. but this time it was held at the boutique at Central Embassy. Kris Manoonsirikul, now based in Singapore, took us around the men's and women's displays which were inspired by romanticism, both the happy and dark sides.

Sopana Lavichant of distributor Pacifica explained the back strap design was inspired by the dok kaew or orange jasmine flower and is exclusive to Thailand, with the limited edition numbered bags available in only two colours, white and black.

Then Kate Spade at its boutique at EmQuartier launched its Unlock Your Heart range for the summer hosted by partners Wikanda Patanabumrung and Porndet Chandawanich of PAT Luxury. There was a good turnout of young celebrities to check out the colourful new collection.
Portraits of Life @ Gaysorn Village
Over at Gaysorn Village, marketing head Jirath Vattanapataraset introduced the Portraits of Life exhibition featuring photographs of personalities and their favourite beauty brands as captured by leading photographer Wasan Puengprasert.
