The biggest event of Naphalai's week was the Gen.T 2019 unveiling and after party

Generation T 2019

Last week’s big event was the unveiling of Generation T 2019. Since this is already the third year that we are presenting our list of young (under 40) trailblazers in various categories, there is no excuse for you not to know what Gen.T is all about. This year, however, is the first time that the lists of all eight Asia Tatlers have been combined into one big book with 400 selected from across the region.

We were among the first to hold our launch event for Gen. T, which was at the newly opened Rosewood Hotel. This year’s honourees enjoyed a gourmet dinner with Tamara Lamuniere, head of Generation T Asia, flying in from Hong Kong to tell everyone about the exciting projects in the pipeline, including the first-ever summit to be held in Hong Kong in November. Sakson Rouypirom of the non-profit Sati organisation, Generation T Thailand’s CSR project, spoke about his work with refugees in Thailand.

Following dinner, the Gen. T listers and Thailand Tribe members went up to the hotel’s Lennon’s retro record bar, where they were joined by honourees of past years for a fun after-party that refused to end. With most of the attendees under 40, I did start to feel my age so decided to leave before long, before someone came up to ask if I was at the wrong party.

A Gold Dyson Hairdryer

I am always interested in anything that Dyson, the global technology company that produces home appliances (and soon, a battery electric vehicle) comes up with. The Dyson Supersonic hairdryer was developed using precision engineering with a patented digital motor for fast drying without extreme heat. Now, it has gone one step further and introduced the Supersonic 23.75k gold hairdryer—not only does it dry and protect hair, it is also almost a piece of art. Dyson’s engineers first learnt the gilding skills from a master guilder and came up with their own technique, where each layer of super-thin 23.75k gold is applied by hand. Design engineer Brian Wong was in town to explain the process at the Dyson shop at Siam Paragon.

Banlang Mek The Musical

My week ended with the Banlang Mek The Musical 2019 at Muangthai Rachadalai theatre. I had been invited by both producer Scenario and Aruya Buddhinan, mother of the lead actress Suthasinee Buddhinan for the remake of this very popular drama about a mother’s love. For Suthasinee, this is one of her first local productions since she moved to live in the US with her American husband Mark Rodrigues and son Dante. The musical produced and directed by Scenario boss Takonkiet Virawan was fast paced with excellent singing by some of the cast members. The musical runs until July 21.
