Naphalai's Diary: September 17-23

A slow week for Naphalai is still one with an event everyday and two anniversary parties

After the excitement of the previous week during my European trip, it was good to get back to the relative quiet of the office. Although it wasn’t too calm last week as it was once again time to put an issue to bed. That meant I had to skip a few events as I needed to be in the office, but it was not an altogether bad thing to spend more time inside than do the usual running around.

Ma Maison X Stella McCartney

With Stella McCartney's eco-friendly Loop sneaker

Even then I did attend at least one event a day. On Monday it was a lunch at Ma Maison for the introduction of Stella McCartney’s Loop sneakers. For those who know the brand, they know the designer is a strict vegetarian who refuses to use any animal products such as leather or fur in her designs which strive to be eco-friendly. The sneakers are made with out the use of glue and the special stitching that is used can be taken apart so at the end of the shoes’ life, the parts can be dismantled and recycled. The Loop sneakers are available for men and women. The lunch was also vegetarian, which I greatly enjoyed.

Minor Group's 50th Anniversary

At Minor's 50th with Bill and Kathy Heinecke and their grandson

On Tuesday was the big party to celebrate the Minor group’s 50th anniversary. Founder William E Heinecke typifies a self-made success story and his empire now includes just about all lifestyle aspects, from hotels and food to fashion and entertainment. The event was at the Royal Paragon Hall, which means that many, many guests were expected and those who turned up ranged from government officials to leading businessmen and socialites. In fact, it got to the point where it was almost impossible to walk around without spotting familiar faces.

Sisley's Phyto Rouge Lipstick & Stylo Lumiere

Sisley's new Phyto Rouge lipsticks

The next day I stopped by at Sisley for the launch of its Phyto Rouge lipstick and Stylo Lumiere contour pencil. The best demonstration of these products was actual usage on the face, and each of us had a private make-up session followed by photo by a professional photographer. It’s amazing how good make-up can change not only your face but also your mood and outlook as well.

Farewell, Fabio!

Saying farewell to Fabio De Cillis

I then had to make time to attend the farewell of Fabio De Cillis, Italian trade commissioner, at the Bangkok Marriott Sukhumvit. The Italian Trade Agency office was our neighbour at our old home at Bubhajit building and we often ran into each other—most times when we were going to the toilets! After almost five years in Thailand, he is returning to his head office in Rome.

Akira Back Kitchen Takeover

Chef Akira Back with general manager Bob Fabiano

I couldn’t stay too long at the cocktail as I had to dash to the Marriott Marquis for a dinner by award-winning chef Akira Back. The Korean-born American-raised chef is known for his modern Asian-inspired dishes and was in town for a three-day promotion. His food is colourful not only in terms of presentation but also taste. Also a martial arts fan, the evening started with a muay thai presentation right in the middle of the hotel’s lobby before guests moved up to the Akira Back restaurant on the 37th floor.

So Culinary Showdown

So Sofitel Culinary Showdown judges

Am I foodie? How could I not be when I my job includes invitations to try chefs’ creations from all over the world on a regular basis. I suppose this qualifies me to a certain extent to be a judge and on Thursday I joined the judging panel of the So Culinary Showdown, where the chefs participating in the So Amazing Chefs at So Sofitel Bangkok compete in a cooking challenge. The award-winning chefs formed four teams and in 75 minutes prepared a dish from secret ingredients, which turned out to be seafood and banana blossom. The dishes were then presented to the panel of judges for the top prize, as well as to the diners joining the event for the popular vote. In addition to me, the other judges were three chefs, Olivier Limousin from L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon, Amerigo Sesti from J’Aime and Chumpol Jangprai from R-Haan and Sid Sehgal, owner of Indus. The blue team cooked up four items and won for their creativity and taste.

Launch of Khun By Yoo

Sorry if sounds like I am boasting, but how many can say they have a wine bottle with their own picture on the label. Well, Sansiri came up with this gimmick for the launch of the condominium KHUN by Yoo. Held at the sales gallery at J Avenue, chief creative officer Ou Noppadol Phaholyothin welcomed guests who then had their photograph taken to be turned into a label. Neat, don’t you agree? I won’t be opening that bottle any time soon.

Park Lane's 8th Anniversary

Suriyon Sriorathaikul at Park Lane's eighth anniversary event

Saturday was especially busy for me, with two events. First was the celebration of the eight anniversary of Park Lane, the community mall belonging to the Beauty Gems family. Suriyon Sriorathaikul organised a fashion show followed by lunch at the restaurants at the mall. Although it was an afternoon event, there was no lack of dazzling jewellery worn by the guests.

Timeless Elegance Tea

Finally, the Timeless Elegance tea presented by Dusit Thani Bangkok showcasing Thai attire from the Ayutthaya period, to the Ratanakosin era followed by the Siam Renaissance, from the time of King Rama IV to the present. The lobby lounge presented the perfect setting for the elegant fashion show and tea hosted by general manager Titiya Chooto.
