Who would our editor-in-chief be if she didn't party with Tilda Swinton, Pharrell Williams and Lily-Rose Depp when they were in town last week?

I didn’t move far from the river last week.

First there was the Chanel Cruise 2018/19 show, presented at Paris’ Grand Palais in May and then brought to Bangkok in all its spectacular glory. Two shows of 1,000 guests each followed by an after party still left many Thais in tears as they were not able to secure an invitation.  This was because many international guests and celebrities had also been invited providing those lucky enough to be there the opportunity to rub shoulders with names like Lily-Rose Depp, Caroline de Maigret, Soo Joo Park, Tilda Swinton, Pharrell Williams and Gaspard Ulliel.

The destination was kept a secret until the last moment, with guests only knowing they were to rendez-vous at the Mandarin Oriental. From there, we boarded a boat to cross over to Chanel’s own Pier No 5, where a warehouse had been turned into the good ship La Pausa. Models sashayed on the deck of this cruise liner in light fabrics and fluid silhouettes that brought together a blend of nonchalance and style. With the stop in Bangkok, Karl Lagerfeld is that much closer to landing all over the world with his Cruise collections that embody travelling in all its forms.

Another grand event was the launch of the Princess Hanayaka make-up collection, a collaboration between Shiseido and HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana. Held at The Siam, the high tea event was presided over by the Princess who put aside protocol by sitting at a table with other guests to watch the beauty demonstration and fashion show. According to Tatsuki Nagao, managing director of Shiseido Thailand, Her Royal Highness dedicated more than two years in creating the eye, face and lip products and also designed the whimsical packaging.

Later that evening was what was billed as the world’s first live art performance on a barge on the Chao Phraya River. Since there was no way we could get from The Siam to the historic Siam Commercial Bank at Talad Noi—where we were to board—in time by car, we asked the hotel if its shuttle boat could make a special stop at Talad Noi for us. And so it did, ensuring we were able to get on, albeit with a bit of a delay in the vessel’s departure time.

And I am glad we didn’t miss this event hosted by Ou Nopadon Baholyodhin, chief creative officer of real estate developer Sansiri. A huge canvas had been set up along the length of the barge where Spanish artist Miquel Barcelo moved up and down, painting while accompanied by live music produced by a violin and different items. As the boat sailed along the river, the artist repeatedly painted over forms that faded after a while, highlighting the Buddhist concept of impermanence. At the end, the canvas was back to its original state—completely blank. Guests were free to move around after the performance, with many heading to the bar at one end of the barge and enjoying the lights along the river.

From art to a children’s playground. And what a playground. To celebrate Mickey Mouse’s 90th birthday, Disney has joined hands with King Power to turn its Rangnam location into a magical land for children. Mickey and his friends are there to welcome everyone, with games and special-edition gifts throughout the festive season and Children’s Day, until January 27. Great for the kids but also enjoyable for the young at heart, no matter what age.

There were also a few fashion events.

Fon Soraruk Tikaphanya of Archive 026 launched her new collection at Siam Discovery with a videography exhibition in collaboration with photographer Nat Prakobsantisuk. Part of her Transform range, the Something from Alice collection takes us on a journey to Alice’s Wonderland.

H&M meanwhile gave a sneak preview of its Moschino TV collaboration, which will be available in stores from November 8. Creative director Jeremy Scott has designed a lookbook that celebrates the creativity and energy of the people who are his friends. It is a loud and bold collection that invites everyone to share the fun, he says.

Korea also introduced its K-Collection at The Athenee, supported by its Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Organised by the Korea Fashion Association, the multi-label runway show presented five designers brands: D-Antidote, Lie, D.Gnak, Greedilous and Tibaeg. With K-fashion still going strong among Thais, the resort and spring/summer 2019 collections are certain to be well received.

With the acquisition of Italian shoe brand Geox by Pacifica Group, the husband and wife duo of Opras and Sopana Lavichant has launched a store at Central World. Flying in for the opening was company president Mario Moretti Polegato. Best known for its “breathable” shoes, it is expected that the store will be introducing more fashionable models to the local market.

Not too many businesses can boast of being able to celebrate their 71st birthday, but the Central Department Store did just that with its annual flower showcase. The flagship store was turned into a floral paradise highlighting special breeds of roses from the UK. Actress Yaya Urassaya Sperbund put in a guest appearance as the floral princess. As usual, a huge crowd turned up to admire the flower displays—in fact so many that it was almost impossible to see the floral creations.

L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon at MahaNakhon Cube has launched a three-course menu celebrating autumn and harvest time and featuring seasonal produce from the French countryside. At 2,950 baht per person, it is very affordable for a gourmet meal prepared by chef Olivier Limousin. I never say no to an opportunity to try the gourmet offerings as well as its signature mashed potatoes.

And finally, bag designer Alexia Kay and jeweller Stephanie Lim of the Stefana brand joined hands to organise a weekend charity fashion show and tea to raise funds for Make-A-Wish Thailand. Held at the Dusit Thani, the celebrity models included former Miss Universe Natalia Glebova, Asia’s Next Top Model winner Jessica Amornkuldilok and socialites Jareyadee Spencer and Sorat Amatayakul. Khunying Dhipavadee Meksawan represented Make-A-Wish and was seated at the diplomatic table with spouses and ambassadors.
