Naphalai's Diary: August 27-September 2
Last week was quite busy.
Luckily with the September issue out of the way I could spend more time out of the office. The most important event as far as we were concerned was the official launch of our Generation T 2018 list. This is the second edition listing 50 young achievers under 40 who represent the new generation of leaders. Gen.T is a pan-Asian effort involving eight Asian Tatlers, with the aim to establish a network for these young entrepreneurs to meet and learn from each other.
Instead of a launch party at a hotel in Bangkok, we decided to make it a weekend getaway, thanks to the support of the Holiday Inn Vana Nava Hua Hin. Guests checked in on Friday afternoon, and for those who arrived early, there was a spa face treatment presented by Cle de Peau. The event itself was held at the ballroom where a good number of Gen.T listers turned up, as well as some members of the Tribe selection panel. A special cocktail created by the Vesper team was enjoyed by guests plus lots of finger food. The party continued with everyone joining in the opening of Vana Nava Sky, the hotel’s rooftop bar, hosted by Suwat and Proudputh Liptapanlop, owners of the hotel. The next day some stayed on for the sky brunch before the drive back to Bangkok.
The other big event...
—was the opening of the Waldorf Astoria Bangkok, the luxury brand’s first hotel in Southeast Asia. A glamorous crowd turned up for the celebration at the ballroom which was also attended by owner Dhanin Chearavanont and Daniel Welk, operations vice president for Hilton Asia Pacific. After the official proceedings, guests descended from the ballroom to move to the main wing where food had been prepared at the food and beverage outlets. With so many people around I decided I would come back when it was quieter to check out the hotel facilities. The Ratchaprasong area is quickly becoming crowded with high-end hotels.
Fashion, Fashion, Fashion and More Fashion
Last week was a busy one for fashion as well. I couldn’t make it to Elle Fashion Week as I was in Hua Hin, but there were other fashion happenings. Proenza Schouler has come up with an extension to its ready-to-wear collection—PSWL (Proenza Schouler White Line)—presenting everyday wardrobe staples. The fall 2018 collection, which focuses on relaxed silhouettes, bright graphics and bold prints, is now available at the boutique at EmQuartier.
Diane Von Furstenberg also showed its DVF fall collection at its shop at EmQuartier, marked by bright colours and prints, with an emphasis on its well-known wrap-around dresses. There was a mini fashion show hosted by Pat Luxury Group, distributor of DVF.
Also presenting its fall range was H&M, at its showroom at Central World. In addition to the usual fall tones, there were bright colours as well to liven up the collection. H&M is celebrating its sixth anniversary as well and is offering free 16 Line stickers designed by illustrator Mamo Vorama Ampairat.
Another fashion event was Busardi’s new collection at Anantara Siam. The first Thai label to show during Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week, designer Busardi Muntabhorn showed her expertise at sourcing beautiful brocades and lace, turning them into haute couture creations. The fashions are shown twice a year in Bangkok, organised with the assistance of her London-based son, Tuck.
Yet another Thai-grown fashion brand, Jim Thompson, unveiled its pop-up store at Emporium. Taking inspiration from a forest in the heart of the city, the store features fashion and lifestyle merchandise in colours of the woods. Joining Rachaya Veerapong, personal goods director were Gerald Mazzalovo, group CEO, and chairman Bill Booth, who tends to keep a low profile nowadays.
Shutterbugs, meanwhile, now have a photography-themed eatery with the opening of Café Leitz by Pacamara at EmQuartier. Named after the founder of Leica camera, Ernst Leitz, it is managed by A-List, the local distributor of the cameras in Thailand. Hosted by Danai and Disaya Sorakraikitikul, the opening was packed with guests eager to try this café.
Finally there was a lunch hosted by Dusit Thani Bangkok as part of its Timeless Legend campaign with monthly charity activities to be organised until the hotel’s next chapter. "It Started With A Woman’s Dream" was a lunch for underprivileged breast cancer patients from the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer (QSCBC) prepared by chef Kaew Paweenuch Yodpreechavichitr, winner of the first MasterChef Thailand. They were joined by Dusit general manager Titiya Chooto, Dr Kris Chatamara of QSCBC and MR Priyangsri Wattanakul of the Thai Red Cross Society.
