WHY GO? Set in the five-star Okura Prestige Hotel, Yamazato has been long touted as one of Bangkok’s finer Japanese establishments. It features authentic and generally traditional Japanese fine dining, using high-quality ingredients prepared under the instruction of master chef Shigeru Hagiwara.

WHAT TO ORDER? Start with otsukuri moriawase with its seven types of sashimi. It makes a lightly pleasant and familiar opening point. Follow this with kakiage tempura, the classic crispy battered prawns and scallops, which are plump and full of the flavours of the deep. Wagyu beef tenderloin is, as one would expect, beautifully tender, well-marbled and flavourful. Enjoy it with a side of grilled vegetables. It is worth noting that Yamazato celebrates many Japanese festivals throughout the year with special gozen lunch platters and multi-course kaiseki dinner menus featuring outstanding and sometimes unusual seasonal and local specialities.

Drinks The drink menu offers premium sakes and even the lower end of the price spectrum is very good. There are of course sochu and whiskies as well as a varied wine list, including lesser known and often underrated Japanese wines.
