WHY GO? Chef Maurizio Menconi lets his creativity fly free. His contemporary Italian creations will enrapture and bewilder diners from the first savoury bite to sweet finale. He his team deserve rave accolades.
WHAT TO ORDER? Originally from Camiore in Tuscany, Menconi has worked in Bangkok for over a decade. After years at La Scala he opened White Lies 12 months ago. He selects seasonal ingredients from Asia and Europe and creates an ever-changing menu—Italian omakase, he calls it, with small bites that can go up to 15 courses. Start with petite oranges filled with negroni, a favourite aperitif. Baccla mantecato, a classic Venetian recipe of mashed salt cod, comes in tartlets. Black churros, a mix between crispy panzerotto and choux dough, is disguised as pieces of charcoal to dip in a velvety carbonara sauce that would make a Roman patrician crave more. Anjou quail arrives in three parts—a crepinette stuffed with foie gras, leg and wing confit croquettes, and liver parfait in potato nest. To finish black forest is dense chocolate 'earth' with ice cream and preserved amarena cherries on a tree of demerara sugar, while limoncello tart and chocolate pralines with honey and mocha bursts with flavour. Both are a fitting end to an exceptional dining experience.
Drinks A remarkable list of wines from Europe and boutique New World wineries. Do look out for the wine pairing options.
