WHY GO? Umenohana is styled like a traditional Japanese ryokan (inn), serving kaiseki cuisine prepared and presented with meticulous detail and the freshest of seafood and quality seasonal ingredients.
WHAT TO ORDER? A specialty at the restaurant is the homemade tofu created using Hokkaido beans. Opt for yuba sashimi, silky soy skin served with a dash of soy sauce and wasabi. Another delectable starter is mineoka tofu, a stretchy milk pudding dabbed with a spot of yuzu miso sauce. Follow this with a selection of sashimi or sushi, with choices from the juicy hon maguro toro (fatty bluefin tuna) and akami (lean tuna), or a subtler tasting and nuttier kanpachi fish. Choices of shellfish and uni sushi are also excellent additions. For a savoury course, go for kuroge wagyu yogan yaki, black wagyu beef grilled with aromatic garlic butter and Japanese sauce. A seafood alternative is king crab, either steamed or grilled, served with a vinegar dipping sauce. The crab is meaty and oozes the flavours of the ocean. End the meal with an extra-thickened broth of miso, before digging into a limited but satisfying selection of dessert.
Drinks The drink list boasts an impressive collection of Japanese sake and shochu. There is also a small selection of wines, whisky and beer.
