Review

WHY GO? The Boathouse has legendary status on Phuket, attracting European and Thai royalty and those who appreciate the most sophisticated wines. Recently refurbished, this seafront institution provides a fine spot for great leisurely meals.

WHAT TO ORDER? Chef Jonathan Bruell directs the culinary team in what may be Phuket’s most famous dining room facing directly onto the Andaman Sea. His menu stresses classic European cuisine balanced by innovations with Southeast Asian tastes. Rock lobster cocktail served with avocado and tom yum mayonnaise is a perfect starter. The signature massaman lamb curry has a richer combination of spices with succulent imported lamb than the Thai version. Bruell also reinvents tasty crab ravioli pasta with a classic piquant tom yum sauce and uses Australian grass-fed beef cheek to pair with a milder coconut based green curry. But the menu also has many Western influences such as the rosemary herbed Australian lamb cutlets and pan-fried French foie gras with a tamarind sauce and a hint of truffle. Many weekly promotions and special menus are offered, including Bruell’s famous Friday lunch with free flow wine.

Drinks Over 600 labels, including a 1990 La Tache Burgundy priced at 240,000 baht. More affordable New World wines, including labels from Lebanon and Portugal, are available. Some 24 wines can be had by the glass.
