WHY GO? Chiang Mai’s first fine dining restaurant. What is charming is that nothing seems to have changed much over the past four decades, except the menu of classic French fare, which is updated periodically with premium seasonal produce.
WHAT TO ORDER? White gloved waiters serve fuss-free but classic dishes hidden under old fashioned cloches. The focus here is on the produce and sauces and the menu has something to please everybody with its wellbalanced selection of meats, seafood, hot, cold, light, heavy and vegetarian. Starters not to be missed include escargot dripping in garlic oil, New Zealand mussels with herb butter, Royal Project crayfish cocktail and the perfect vichyssoise. For mains, the sweet and fresh Boston lobster is thermidored while the roasted tender double fillet of US angus beef is prepared chateaubriand style and served with a tangy bearnaise sauce and the light-roasted turbot comes with a playful champagne sauce. To finish, don’t miss out on the divine profiteroles filled with vanilla ice cream and topped with dripping hot chocolate sauce. Tarte tatin with calvados sauce is also excellent.
Drinks Lovers of wine will find nothing to complain about with the wine list, with labels that start in the low thousands and head off to giddying heights. Classic cocktails and a good liqueur menu make for a memorable dining occasion.
