WHY GO? Koi has stunning views of Bangkok's skyline and the ambience is intimate, yet lively. It serves modern Japanese sushi with a Californian twist and continues to impress. Exceptional service from restaurant staff at its finest.
WHAT TO ORDER? A vast selection of signature dishes on the menu. Start with an appetiser of crispy rice tuna or salmon, which is prepared tartare style with a house dressing and arrives on a cube of crispy rice, as if a piece of nigiri sushi was being served. A playful dish, it offers a good combination of crispy and chewy textures. Another signature, grilled New Zealand lamb chops, is flavoured with a light teriyaki sauce, a surprisingly tasteful touch. The meat is cooked to a medium blush and is tender and juicy but beware, portions are on the generous side. The creativity of executive chef Hisashi Iwata shines through in every dish, including his excellent white shrimp tempura, which is creamy but offers some crunch for balance. The modern twists aside, traditional Japanese sushi and sashimi are also on the menu in omakase-style dining.
Drinks A decent wine list with Old and New World labels at various price points. Also a good selection of signature cocktails, a great choice of sakes and a few local and international beers. For after-dinner drinks and dancing, head to The Club at Koi next door.
