WHY GO? Located in a charming converted early 20th-century Thai house built by descendents of King Rama IV, Portuguese chef Nelson Amorim serves up new wave native cuisine with innovative combinations utilising premium imported ingredients. Il Fumo is part of the Foodie Collection of restaurants.

WHAT TO ORDER? Begin with a classic homemade duck egg tagliolini pasta dressed with slivers of earthy black truffle in a rich and creamy sauce. Alternatively, try the intriguing combination of pan-fried duck foie gras with charcoal-grilled eel. Follow this with one of the carefully chosen exceptional steaks including rib-eye and striploin from Snake River in Idaho, a prized crossbred wagyu or the equally sought-after Rubia Gallega from Spain served with a distinctive caramelised crust. These are accompanied by an innovative crispy potato millefeuille and padron peppers from Spain, which are charred, blistered and memorable. Amorim also offers tempting five- and seven-course tasting menus showcasing his talents, with a focus on both ingredients and his travels. Desserts include bolo de bolacha, the Portuguese cousin of tiramisu, which makes for a tasty and decadent finish.

Drinks An ample wine list is available with a heavy Italian leaning. Labels have been carefully chosen with several well-priced gems, including a small number by the glass.
