WHY GO? The experience of dining in an exquisite, antique Thai mansion makes this an impressive choice for revelling in an elegant venue. Diners who shy away from spicy Thai food can ask for dishes mellowed for sensitive taste buds.
WHAT TO ORDER? Pearls of Blue Elephant is a very light sample plate of three bitesized starters including grilled river prawn yum, steamed chicken blue dumpling and lue beef satay—all available separately as well. Smoked sturgeon salad with mango and caviar is more impressive and arrives as four big spoons of Royal Project fish on a slice of raw mango draped with dark caviar. Crab curry with betel leaves is a southern Thai favourite. A clay hot pot of mild but tasty roasted duck curry simmers with pineapple, tomato and green grapes and is best enjoyed with brown riceberry. Tamarind snowfish comes as chunks of batter-fried fish moistened with sweet touches of tamarind sauce and the zest of shallots and kaffir lime leaves. Benjarong cashew nuts is a fun, complex mix of various nuts plus a sweet sauce and onions. Finish with a traditional Thai dessert, all of which are intriguing, particularly a divine jasmine ice cream.
Drinks Enthusiasts seeking niche beers and Thai-inspired cocktails will like the extensive choice. As well an array of the usual spirits plus an eclectic wine list and a range of refreshing fruit juices.
