Favourite place in Hong Kong?
Mai Po is just magical. In a busy city like ours, Mai Po is so tranquil. Its landscape is so different. And it’s home to so many birds and full of life.
Favourite food?
Ice cream.
Favourite hobby?
Diving and birdwatching. I also love football—I played for a youth team in Hong Kong when I was young.
Favourite bird?
Hornbills. They’re big, impressive birds [with a loud wingbeat]. They nest in holes of big trees, so their presence indicates the good health of the forest. Sadly, their population is dwindling because of tree felling.
What’s in your bag?
Binoculars, camera, enough water for hiking, rain gear and Dextro [energy] tablets.
Most dangerous mission?
I went to Cambodia and didn’t take any [anti-malaria] medication because I didn’t want the side-effects to get in the way of my work. I caught malaria and was at the stage where it was going up to my brain.
Bucket list destination?
Sri Lanka. I have yet to see a wild leopard. So I’d be going for the birds and the leopards.
Idol?
John MacKinnon, a conservationist in Hong Kong. He did more or less the same things as I do now, but that was a few decades before me. I admire his spirit, which made him so successful in his time.
Life motto?
Be true to yourself, be happy and enjoy your life.
