Young artists, aged 10 to 18, can champion women's empowerment through art by participating in the She Is More global youth art competition. The initiative, presented by IIX Foundation, is now accepting artwork submissions focused on the theme of women's defiance
“I drew a famous female justice who stood up for women’s rights in her own right. Her name was Ruth Bader Ginsburg,” wrote seventeen-year-old Sihao Qian of artwork ‘More than Resilient’, which was awarded first runner up in its category (14-18 years old) of the She Is More 2022 art competition, presented by the IIX Foundation.
”I combine the elements of resilience together to form her face. Her forehead consisted [of] a tree, waterfall, the sun, clouds, and a woman doing yoga, indicating the connection between natural self-restoration and women’s health,” Qian, who hails from China, continued. “The bridge of her nose has a crack where the earth has dried up, but her resilience let a four-leaf clover grow on this dry piece of soil. I painted a gecko with a regenerated tail and a leaf as her cheek, and made up her chin with a baby, a whale, an umbrella, and the sharp broken stone. These elements represented the tenacious vitality and will of women, and reflect the love, freedom and strength of females. She is resilient. She is more.”

Thirteen-year-old Natalie Teo Zi Ning from Singapore painted a female athlete in action in a piece titled ‘Equality of sports’, describing it as showing that “sports is not only meant for men but for women too. Although some men are stronger than women, women are still able to play sports just like men … they prove to everyone that they are more than what they are said to be and deserve to be respected the same way as men are … She is more than what people say.” The artwork won the grand prize in the category for 10-13 year-olds.
The She Is More 2022 art competition was a celebration of women and inclusivity, and it welcomed 250 artwork submissions from young artists spanning 32 countries around the theme of Resilience.
This year, the competition returns for its fourth instalment, celebrating the strength and courage of women and girls who break free from societal norms, with the theme She Is Defiant.
