Arbiter of Taste

For over 40 years, Tina Tan Leo has helped Singaporeans, and those in the region, to up the ante when it comes to personal style. Thanks to her, major fashion houses such Versace, Roberto Cavalli, Jimmy Choo, and more were able to enter Singapore and Southeast Asia. Back in the 1980s and for a large portion of the ’90s, such luxury brands depended on retailers like Tan Leo to represent them in the region. This year, the businesswoman is among Singapore’s best-dressed honourees for Tatler Asia’s Most Stylish 2023 list. In our newsletter cover story, Tan Leo reflects on her career as she celebrates the 10th anniversary of her luxury concierge service, Privato.

Luxury comes in different forms. In the renovation of this Singapore home, luxury is the abundant space, natural light, breeze and green views through large window expanses, as well as plentiful natural materials. Luxury does not necessarily equate to expensive materials, but it can be attained with good craftsmanship achieved through meticulous attention to details in both design and construction, says Justin Long, founder of Hjgher. His design firm was tasked to give this 3,800 sq ft condominium apartment its beautiful makeover.

After the July release of Christopher Nolan’s movie on J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist known as the “father of the atomic bomb”, Hong Kong hatter Richard Avery thought he would see a surge of customers coming to his vintage hat shop looking for the “Oppenheimer hat”—and he was partially right. People didn’t come wanting to buy the specific style worn by Cillian Murphy, the Irish actor who played Oppenheimer in the film—a flat top fedora with a wide brim—but there were plenty of people wanting to get a hat; any hat.
