We speak to astrologer Deborah Lynna about the things you need to keep in mind before a birth chart reading

While many of us know how to look up our horoscope—online, in a magazine or via an app—getting a professional reading done is a little more complex, and the process can seem daunting.

If you’ve never had a reading done before, here are eight things to be aware of before you invest in a good quality reading with an astrologer.

1. Get an accurate birth time

Believe it or not, the main hurdle with many who seek a birth chart reading is not being sure of their exact time of birth—and this is very important! An approximate time can lead to an inaccurate reading, so check your birth certificate, contact the hospital where you were born (they usually have an archive), or ask your family members. If at the end of all this, you still only have an approximate time, check with your astrologer if they can work with what you have—you don’t want to end up with a reading that isn’t accurate or helpful.

2. Find an astrologer you vibe with

Ask friends you trust for any recommendations they have, or contact astrologers you’ve been following, and ask them about their process to see how you enjoy that initial interaction. Trust your gut on this one—you have to feel comfortable with the astrologer you work with. And don’t worry, it’s completely acceptable to engage and (politely) decline if it’s not the right fit—the astrologer will understand.

3. Choose the right type of reading

As is the case with any practitioner, reading types depend on the astrologer.

Typically, if you have never done a reading before, go with the standard reading, which is usually a one-hour birth chart analysis. This will root you in the basics such as your life path, relationships, career and family themes.

Another popular option is the year-ahead or calendar reading, which employs predictive techniques to help you understand themes and events coming up in your life.

Some astrologers prefer to work by length of time. In which case, you can ask questions—whether that is birth chart basics or about future predictions—and they will go into greater depth depending on the amount of time you’ve paid for the reading (one hour, two hours etc).

There are many other reading types: relationship synastry (how do you and a partner or business partner match up), specific questions, vocational direction, picking a date for an important occasion, and even medical readings. Consider your current needs to help you decide on the kind of reading you want.

4. To share or not to share?

During the reading, you do not need to share anything you do not wish to, but if you are seeking an answer to specific questions, then context is helpful. Your astrologer is not a psychic! They are there to help you navigate your life, but they are unlikely to know the details the way you do.

Depending on the astrologer, they may or may not ask questions before. So spend some time considering specific areas of concern and focus on one or two major themes to explore during your reading so you don’t feel overwhelmed by the potential scope of your session.

Remember, there’s only so much you can tackle in an hour.

5. Should you do a video or phone call?

Readings can be done in person, over the phone or a video call. If you have a preference, let your astrologer know in advance or check with them how they typically like to work. This will also help you decide if the astrologer is the right match for you.

6. Find a quiet space for the reading

A birth chart reading is a personal and intimate thing, so find a quiet and private space for the session to ensure you can receive all that information in safety and comfort.

You should also have a pen and paper with you for notes. Most astrologers will provide an audio recording of the session, but if they do not, feel free to ask if you can record it yourself.

7. Can you follow up after your session ends?

After the reading, most astrologers will permit some follow up questions … within reason. Take some time to listen back on the recording to get the most out of your experience. Then, if you still have questions or if something is unclear, email to ask.

However, it is not appropriate to launch into a separate thread which might otherwise be deemed as another reading. If the astrologer feels the extra information would be best suited for a follow up reading, they will suggest it.

8. Explore your options

Be aware that astrologers will see different things on your birth chart depending on their training and techniques. Once you’ve settled on the right fit, returning to the same astrologer each time you do a reading is beneficial because they can go deeper with your chart each time; it’s not unlike sticking with the same therapist or family doctor.

Also, giving feedback on accuracy is helpful for both you and your astrologer. As a regular client, they will have your chart in the back of their minds, which helps you get the most out of your readings in the long term.
