Lotte Resort Jeju Artvillas, nestled in the serene Saekdal region of Seogwipo City, stands out as a premier destination for immersing oneself in the distinct charm of Jeju’s azure waters and volcanic landscape. Each villa is uniquely designed by one of its cabal of globally acclaimed architects, which includes Seung Hyo-sang, Kengo Kuma, and Dominique Perrault.

A luminary in modern Korean architecture and the master planner of Artvillas, Seung designed a villa that encapsulates the enchanting silhouette of Jeju. This mysterious volcanic island, where Hallasan Mountain meets the coast, inspires its design. It notably features linear elements that blend seamlessly to showcase the authentic allure of Eastern simplicity.

Celebrated Japanese architect Kengo Kuma has created a space that captures the essence of Jeju’s oreums (dead volcanoes) in its rounded form, offering a sense of the island’s robust yet yielding nature. During the colder months, guests can find solace in the private outdoor heated jacuzzis and hinoki sauna and bask in the energy and peace of communal areas like the Olle Garden, which is planted with cypress trees and aromatic herbs.

Central to its identity, Artvillas emphasises the “art” in the name through unique programmes, positioning itself at the cultural epicentre. It is home to the Arario Museum, renowned for contemporary art exhibitions; the Kim Tek-hwa Museum, dedicated to the eponymous artist who spent his life painting Jeju’s landscapes; and the Bonte Museum, where visitors can explore works by notable figures, including Korean media artist Paik Nam-june, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol, and Picasso, alongside Korean handicrafts.

The resort also supports local talent by recommending monthly exhibitions in Jeju. The Meta Landscape Tour, designed by Seung and led by his protégé, architect Yang Hyeon-jun, is a weekend highlight. This presents an unparalleled opportunity to delve into art and architecture against Jeju’s splendour.

After enriching your mind, indulge in the island’s culinary delights. Dishes such as red-banded lobster top shell soybean paste stew, sea urchin seaweed soup, seaweed fulvescens abalone rice porridge, and grilled skin-on black pork belly are quintessential Jeju delicacies that are a must-try.
