Cringe no more at the value of your Malaysian Ringgit, for these beautiful countries in Asia offer superb travel experiences that won't break the bank for Malaysians

My bi-annual trips to Singapore for family visits have come at a great price–literally, as I watch hundreds of ringgit disappear into significantly smaller amounts of Singapore dollars when converted for the trip. It isn’t just our fair neighbour country in the South, but several other destinations on our travel bucket lists that often have us out of pocket when spending on food, accommodation, transport, and shopping (those gifts for your cousin’s neighbour’s aunt aren’t going to buy themselves, after all).

With that in mind, there are plenty of beautiful destinations across Asia where your ringgit won’t shrink and where meaningful experiences can be had for a fraction of the price you would pay for a similar experience elsewhere. From Sri Lanka to the Philippines, here are six gorgeous places for a holiday that won’t hurt your wallet.

Last month, the Sri Lankan government announced it would temporarily waive visa fees for Malaysian tourists from now till March 31, 2024, as part of a pilot project to amp up its tourism industry. Malaysian travellers can make the most of this development and plan a trip to this gorgeous island nation. Given its diversity of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, majestic green mountains, grasslands and countless waterfalls and rivers, Sri Lanka offers nature lovers so much to see in a single trip, particularly in picturesque areas like Ella, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, and Galle.

The timing works out well, given that January to March is considered an ideal period for a trip to Ella, a beautiful town in the Uva Province, and a major railway station between Colombo and Badulla. The world-famous train ride from Kandy to Ella is considered one of the best in the world, given the breadth of landscapes covered, the amazing scenery and the value for money (ticket prices vary depending on whether you opt for a seat or prefer to stand throughout the journey. Tickets are also significantly cheaper when purchased at a train station instead of online).

Did you know? The Philippines was named Asia’s Leading Beach Destination and Leading Dive Destination at the 29th World Travel Awards in 2022, with Catanduanes, Digyo Island, and more than 7,000 other sublime islands to enjoy some sand, sea, and waves with mesmerising views. You needn’t even go further than Clark International Airport to see architectural beauty and flair, given the international airport's inclusion as one of the world’s most beautiful airports honoured with the Prix Versailles Laureate or the World Architecture and Design Award from UNESCO. From stunning mountain regions to beach retreats and heritage attractions galore, the Philippines always delivers when it comes to scenic holidays with something new to see at every turn.

The Loboc River Cruise along the jade-green Loboc River in the province of Bohol is a wonderful way to explore the beauty of the riverside while enjoying a hearty buffet lunch and musical and dance performances from local dance troupes who dazzle tourists with riveting traditional folk dances on floating decks known as balsa.

An announcement by the China Embassy in Malaysia on November 24 revealed that Malaysians will be able to enjoy visa-free travel to China for up to 15 days, starting from December 2023 till November 30, 2024. While we would argue that 15 days isn't nearly enough time to scrape the surface of this vast and enchanting country, Malaysians who make the most of this 15-day visa-free policy from December onwards can start planning a magnificent year-end trip for a chance to see some of the world's most iconic landmarks like Forbidden City, the Terracotta Warriors and the Great Wall of China.

Whether it's a fairytale-like winter escape to Donbei in the Northeast for eight days and seven nights in early February or a hike through the lush Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in the northwestern part of Hunan Province, China has always been a breathe-taking and alluring destination for Malaysians in search of a holiday to remember.

Thailand

It’s been said that Bangkok is Thailand’s haven for shopaholics, given the number of middle to high-end shopping malls like Siam Paragon or Central Embassy, exciting local markets and plentiful dining options in the capital city. It’s no wonder that Malaysians flock to this popular city for a weekend getaway, coming in on direct flights from Kuala Lumpur International Airport and enjoying relative ease and affordability of navigation around the city–thanks to local taxis, ride-hailing apps, the BTS sky train, MRT, Tuk-tuks or even a local river taxi to see the city from a different perspective.

With beautiful scenery, delicious food, various tourist attractions and a wide choice of gorgeous places to stay, Indonesia’s appeal as a global travel destination hits closer to home for Malaysians, given its relative affordability. The archipelago boasts around 17,000 islands for travellers to choose from, calling to beach lovers everywhere and enchanting them with the azure waters and balmy atmosphere of places like Bali, Lombok, Medan, and more.

Stunning temples and more sacred heritage sites, lush jungles, bustling food markets and more represent a wide range of experiences to discover in many Indonesian tour packages. If there were ever a destination to consider splurging on luxury accommodation, Indonesia is it. Trusted travel management platforms like Sedunia or T’roka offer curated luxury packages at prestigious hotels under leading hospitality groups like Aman, Club Med and more, all at highly competitive prices compared to other countries. For instance, Sedunia’s four days-three nights Amanjiwo package in Central Java is priced at RM7,900+ per head (excluding meals), which is around half of what you would pay for just one night at Aman Kyoto, for example.
