Beckham’s international debut for England during the 1998 World Cup is one of the most infamous moments in his career. While it was a momentous occasion, it was marred by a bitter twist. In a crucial round-of-16 match against Argentina, Beckham was fouled by Diego Simeone, and as he lay on the ground, Simeone stood over him and kicked him in the leg. Beckham reacted by kicking Simeone in the back of the leg, and the referee, Kim Milton Nielsen, showed him a red card, leaving his team a man down. England eventually succumbed to defeat, leading to intense backlash from fans and media alike. This incident revealed the intense scrutiny and pressure of representing his country on the grandest stage.

In 2003, Beckham made the shock move from Manchester United to Real Madrid for a record-breaking fee of £24.5 million. It seemed that he had won everything there was to win at Manchester United and was looking for a new challenge. His relationship with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had also become strained at that moment, so a new change was a welcomed sight. This move made him the most expensive English footballer of all time and marked his transition into the realm of global football icons. His four-year stint at the Spanish giants was successful, including a La Liga title and the UEFA Super Cup.
