What does the Year of the Wood Dragon mean for you? World-renowned feng shui expert Dato' Joey Yap reveals an overview of 2024

2024 is the Year of the Wood Dragon and the beginning of a brand new era. Period 9 has finally arrived and it will set the stage for the next 20 decades. Overall, the future looks optimistic for those who are aligned with it. At the same time, those who insist on the old ways are most likely to be left in the dust. The key to a successful and worthwhile 2024 is to embrace change.

While the 12 Animal Signs and the five elements are often visualised as literal elemental animals, it’s not at all like that in Chinese Metaphysics. The “Wood” in the “Wood Dragon” is represented by a tall and majestic tree, while the dragon itself is a mountain. In other words, this year is like that of a tree that has rooted itself on top of a green hillside.

So, what does this mean? A tree is a living thing and so they keep growing. Part of that growth means to shed their bark as new ones are forming internally. As this is the first year of Period 9, it makes sense that the world as a whole is letting go of new practices. For those not in the know, 2024 is the beginning of Period 9 and it will last until 2043.

In recent years, we’ve seen a lot of changes both great and small. If you pay close attention, our way of life has changed and so would be how we conduct ourselves. Breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI) technology are likely to revolutionise many different facets of our day-to-day lives and as of current, we’re still figuring things out and seeing what works, what sticks and what doesn’t.

From the perspective of the year’s astrological chart, you could say that it’s optimistic at a glance. The future’s bright, it’s an exciting time to be alive, and yet trouble is brewing below. Beneath the surface, there’s discontentment and challenges between many different parties. With things being at odds with one another, you might say that all that we have achieved and accomplished so far is not without a price.

While the pandemic wiped out many businesses, online ventures thrived. In the years in between, they grew in size and once we’ve reached relative normalcy–the same business model no longer works. Right now, companies from all over the world are downsizing themselves with massive layoffs. This is the market correcting itself and it’s transpiring even today. Those who couldn’t compete are unfortunately left behind while those hanging on would be reaping the benefits of having fewer competitors on the field.

In Chinese Metaphysics, Wood and Earth elements are opposing forces, and yet they’re the two strongest elements of the year. One characteristic of 2024 would be marked by a “leadership crisis”. There are going to be many elections slated to be held this year and whatever the outcome may be will set the stage for future global politics and economy. People are discontented with the authority, and those in power are looking to retain it. So, it’s interesting to see how it will play out.

On a smaller scale where it involves our livelihood, it’s advisable to deepen one’s skill rather than dabbling. Just as the “Wood” in the Wood Dragon is a tree whose roots dig deep into the earth, you either root yourself by becoming indispensable or you’ll be eliminated from the competition. Simply put, now would not be the time to dabble. Job security should be your priority and complacency will only put you in a vulnerable position where it will allow others to overtake you.

Where health is concerned, the Water element is at the weakest this year and this represents the bladder, kidneys and the urinary system. For most people, this isn’t an issue. However, those with preexisting conditions related to these areas might want to keep an eye out. The energies of the year might aggravate or even worsen the condition if left to its device. So, do remember to drink plenty of water and cut down on sugar. Even if you’re not at risk, it’s still a good practice to be observed to avoid undue worries.

On the grander scale of things, there’s no “good” or “bad” year for everyone–both are true in any year. What you want to do here is to identify the opportunities that are within your reach and make the most out of them. How this year plays out depends on the choices you make, so do make the right decisions.
