Illit has just dropped its second music video ‘Lucky Girl Syndrome’; here’s what we know so far about the girl group, which is composed of Yunah, Minju, Moka, Wonhee and Iroha

Lately, a new generation of K-pop girl bands such as NewJeans and Le Sserafim have been freshening up the K-pop industry. Le Sserafim, which just performed at Coachella, has been topping the charts with their latest singles Smart and Easy, while NewJeans’ song Super Shy has been global success. Now Hybe, the entertainment company behind NewJeans and Le Sserafim, has just launched another girl band called Illit, and this group seems to be equally promising.

Signed under Hybe’s sub-label Belift, the five-members girl band was formed through the survival competition show R U Next?. Here, Tatler gives you a closer look at the journey so far of the newly formed group—composed of Yunah, Minju, Moka, Wonhee and Iroha—which debuted with an EP called Super Real Me.

1. From ‘R U Next?’ to debut

Illit was formed following a seven-round survival programme called R U Next?. The girl band was supposed to be composed of six members, as announced in the final line-up of the show: four Korean members (Yunah, Minju, Wonhee and Youngseo), as well as two Japanese members (Moka and Iroha). However, right before their debut, Youngseo’s exclusive contract with Belift was terminated, and the group debuted as a five-person act.

According to a global press release from Hybe, the name Illit is the combination of the phrase “I will,” representing an “independent spirit and an adventurous will,” and the pronoun “it” to symbolise “something unique.”

2. Meet Yunah, Minju, Moka, Wonhee and Iroha

Very little information is known about Illit’s members at the moment, but there’s no doubt that you’ll hear more about them very soon. Here is what we have gathered so far.

Yunah, who just turned 20, is the oldest member of the group. She ranked sixth in the survival show, R U Next? and was the last member to join Illit. Minju, who’s 19, placed third in the survival show, and on top of singing and dancing, she plays violin. Moka, 19, was born in Fukuoka, Japan, and was the fifth member to be revealed.

At 16, Wonhee was the first member to be revealed, and is the second-youngest member of the group. The youngest member is Iroha, born in Tokyo in 2008.

3. Illit’s first EP, ‘Super Real Me’

Illit officially debuted with the pop-house song Magnetic on March 25. It was released under the Super Real Me project—an EP of four songs. In two weeks, the song’s music video had already been streamed 35 million times on YouTube. Lucky Girl Syndrome’s video, which the band just released, is likely to see a similar level of success.

4. Illit at Paris Fashion Week

Hybe’s latest girl band was spotted at Paris Fashion Week in February, a month before the group had released its first album. They sat at the front row of Acne Studios’ women’s fall-winter 2024 show.

5. Illit shot their debut concept video in Taiwan

Illit’s first project, Super Real Me, was released in March 2024, alongside with a few videos to announce the EP’s launch. The band flew to Taiwan to record these teasers. Walking through the narrow streets of Taipei—its parks, convenient stores, and even its subway—the girls managed to showcase Taiwan’s daily life in a charming way through these candid videos.
