Sombat And Suwimol Somboonterdtana Bought Their Gorgeous Bangkok Condo On A Whim
While Bangkok isn’t short of glamorous addresses, certain properties have become synonymous with the whole notion of ultra-luxury living. One such is 98 Wireless by Sansiri, a prestigious residential tower at the heart of the city where Sombat Somboonterdtana, managing director of Mitsubishi Cambodia and a board member of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, and his wife Suwimol have established a chic pied-a-terre.
Although currently based in Surin province, the couple visit Bangkok regularly. “We come down each month and spend a few days here,” says Sombat. They also have two children, 23-year-old son Warot and 21-year-old daughter Tashinee who, when not studying overseas, like to hang out with their friends at the conveniently situated Wireless Road apartment.
Located on the 10th floor, the 146sqm two-bedroom home boasts a small but elegantly designed white foyer that opens into a central corridor, off which the compact but bijou apartment is arranged. From the natty guest bathroom at one end of the corridor to the bedrooms and living room at the other, everything—including a snug but well-thought-out kitchen—screams urban sophistication. High ceilings and relief mouldings on the walls only add to the feeling of refinement. A well-appointed downtown base for an active nuclear family, it is just as easy to imagine an apartment such as this as a louche bachelor’s pad, as an ultra-high-net-worth executive’s second home, or the first independent property of well-to-do newlyweds.
In fact, 98 Wireless appeals so broadly because it was constructed with the utmost attention to detail, and fine natural materials and finishes are evident throughout the building. These include solid white-oak herringbone floors and rare mahogany crotch door panels imported from the United States, as well as façades made of weathered Portuguese Moleanos limestone. The master bathrooms throughout are dressed in Carrara marble taken from handpicked statuario slabs extracted from the best of Italy’s quarries.
What is also evident in the Somboon-terdtanas’ apartment is the profusion of all things Ralph Lauren. Everything from the furniture to the decorative items throughout the residence seems to be by the American design house, with the exception of a sleek Bang & Olufsen home entertainment system. “We bought the unit already furnished,” Suwimol explains. “The furniture was a big contributing factor in that decision. To be honest, our initial visit was made merely out of curiosity, but we both fell instantly in love with the apartment.” So much so that within a few hours they had purchased it.
There are certain perks to buying an already furnished home, particularly for those with a busy lifestyle. “It requires a lot of time to find the right pieces for a space like this, time we simply did not have, so this was extremely convenient. Besides, we are big fans of both the furniture store DM Home and Ralph Lauren designs,” Suwimol laughs. Renowned New York interior designer Anne Carson’s influence can also be seen in the theme that runs throughout 98 Wireless itself, which perfectly balances the classic and contemporary to achieve what she calls a modern equilibrium theme. And the interior is chic without clutter, giving it a hotel-like sophistication. It suits the Somboonterdtanas—who describe their tastes as somewhere between the modern and the vintage—perfectly.

The apartment’s two bedrooms are located on the left of the corridor. We enter the first to discover a cream-coloured space, the neutral colour scheme offset by an arresting brown leather-covered bed. An essential element to the classic country Western style of the apartment, here too is what appears to be a cowhide patchwork rug, which adds a rustic touch to the room. Next door is the master bedroom. Bedecked in navy blue, white and brown, it features a king-size bed and a gleaming wooden chest-of-drawers, above which a mirror hangs. The room feels right not being overcrowded with furniture. What it does contain blends harmoniously, which gives the space a cosy feel. “I think this must be my favourite spot because I love this bed,” laughs Sombat. Here, sliding glass doors open onto a small balcony where outdoor furniture offers the chance to relax and enjoy some fresh air and the views. The bedroom’s en-suite bathroom is equipped with a roomy shower and an inviting bathtub, both of which showcase the natural beauty of statuario marble. Another luxury feature is a waterproof flat screen.
Moving on we reach the far end of the corridor where the living room and its adjoining compact kitchen is located. Though limited in terms of space, the kitchen’s design is such that it is both practical—containing everything a food-prep area needs—and decorative because its top-of-the-line Gaggenau appliances and light grey-veined marble countertops add an artistic element to the interiors. The living room though is where the family likes to spend quality time together. Like the master bedroom, its colours focus on navy blue, white and browns. A large sofa complemented with colourful cushions faces a flat screen TV by Bang & Olufsen. Next to the television sliding doors lead to the balcony, which is shared with the master bedroom. The living room also accommodates a small area for dining furnished with a gleaming round wooden dining table and four white leather chairs of exquisite craftsmanship. Suspended above is a unique Ralph Lauren Westbury double tier chandelier.
Over and above the property’s aesthetics, the owners also love the fact that 98 Wireless is conveniently situated in central Bangkok. “It is great because we have easy access to businesses, shops, restaurants, hospitals and entertainment venues, the BTS skytrain and the nearby expressway system,” says Suwimol. “In fact, the location was a big factor in helping us to take only three hours to buy the apartment from the moment we saw it. Coupled with the design of 98 Wireless and the services provided, it was an easy choice.”
While the Somboonterdtanas were both raised in expansive homes with gardens and continue to maintain such a family residence in Surin, they are enamoured of their city bolt hole. So much so that they have also purchased a second unit at 98 Wireless.
A financial investment for sure, but also an emotional one because they have peace of mind knowing that Tashinee and Warot will come to benefit from the properties in years to come. “We love the apartments but at the end of the day, they are just material possessions,” Sombat says. “They don’t compare with the kind of warmth one receives from family.”
