Inspired by the 2009 blockbuster, Mercedes-Benz’s Avatar concept car offers a glimpse of the future of mobility

Not one to shy away from pushing the boundaries, Mercedes-Benz surprised fans with a wild concept car at CES 2020, the annual tech trade show that takes place in Las Vegas. This year, the German automaker pulls out all the stops to create Vision AVTR (Advanced Vehicle Transformation) with the help of the director of “Avatar,” James Cameron.

While concept cars are expected to be futuristic and over-the-top, nothing could prepare us for the daring design of Mercedes-Benz’s Vision AVTR. Inspired by Pandora, the world of Avatar, the show car telegraphs the brand’s mission to tread more lightly on the earth with sustainable designs and zero-emission mobility.

Shaped like a “living creature,” as Mercedes calls it, the body of the Vision AVTR is curvaceous with 33 reptile-like "bionic flaps" on the back of the car and outfitted with illuminated wheels.

Once sitting inside, a movie-like world unveils will unveil before your eyes. A glowing “control unit” replaces the steering wheel, which allows “human and vehicle to merge,” Mercedes wrote in a press release. By placing the hand on the “control unit”, the car recognises the driver by his or her heartbeat and breathing. The driver can then control the car using a menu selection which is projected onto the palm of the hand—theoretically.

Besides the next-level technology that goes into the mechanics of Vision AVTR, the electric car is also built with sustainability in mind. The interior is completely vegan, with seats made with sustainable Dinamica leather and the floor decorated with raw rattan. Capable of driving sideways and forwards, the car is powered by an organic battery made from recyclable materials, which are compostable and harmless to the environment.
