Kawita Vatanajyankur Strikes Bangkok Again With A Piece To Accompany Your Afternoon Tea
Coinciding with the ongoing Bangkok Art Biennale, the Peninsula Bangkok is collaborating with globally renowned Thai artist Kawita Vatanajyankur to add some more colour and flavour to their Afternoon Tea programme.
Known for her performance-cum-exhibitions incorporating her own body, Kawita's works often centre around the social issues of feminism, oppression and materialism. This time, she is lending her newest performance art under her video art series "Performing Textile" to the Peninsula's Afternoon Tea special. Together, it is called the "Knit Afternoon Tea".
Against the artist's signature colourful background, she will knit her body, inviting audiences to observe her feminine flesh mangling with the materials. Indeed, Kawita's style of art involves making onlookers feel a discomfort, which she attaches to the theme of her piece. In this case, it is the domination of women and girls in the textile industry.
The idea of the piece is not to depress guests while they have their tea but rather to raise a conversation about issues existing in plain sight. The performance is also the inaugural piece for The Peninsula Bangkok’s Artist in Residence programme, which will rotate artists living in the hotel for up to three months.
Witness Kawita's special performance at The Lobby of the Peninsula Hotel on Saturday, January 26 and February 2, from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. Afternoon Tea is priced 1,400 baht for two. Call 02-020-2888 to make a booking or visit peninsula.com/en/bangkok/5-star-luxury-hotel-riverside for more information.
