Digital Art Museum To Open In Tokyo This Summer
The art collective teamLab and urban developer Mori Building are behind a new digital art museum set to open in Tokyo this summer, inviting visitors to "melt into the art and become part of it."
Located in the Palette Town complex of Odaiba, Tokyo, the facility will be called "MORI Building DIGITAL ART MUSEUM: teamLab Borderless," with the word "borderless" giving a sense of the museum's aim: to "tear down the borders between 'one art and another,' 'art and visitors' and 'oneself and others.'"
With more than 10,000 square meters of "labyrinthine" floor space, the full-scale museum hopes to become a tourist destination, with an eye toward the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The collective teamLab is behind a number of highly immersive digital installations and exhibitions; among recent works, the group created a room-filling installation at the NGV Triennial that swirls to create a vortex around visitors using digital technology. The group's future exhibitions include another 360-degree interactive installation set to launch in Paris this May.
The museum is set for a summer opening, with further details to follow. Find the project page at www.teamlab.art/e/borderless. Find details about teamLab's current and upcoming work: www.teamlab.art/e/
