Chef Massimo Bottura's new countryside bed and breakfast is now open for reservations

Famed chef Massimo Bottura is known around the world for his three-Michelin-starred Osteria Francescana—which was also named the No. 1 restaurant in the world by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants—but both food and countryside hospitality will converge at Bottura's newly-opened country estate outside of Modena, where the chef and his wife, Lara Gilmore, will host guests in a 12-room bed and breakfast.

“Don’t hesitate, come to Modena. In the middle of the food valley, we created a beautiful place… in which you’re going to experience the real Italy,” chef Massimo Bottura told Travel + Leisure in a statement.

The property is set on an Italian estate, boasting an 18th-century mansion, in which guests will find multiple rooms that tout a mix of vintage and contemporary art and sculptures from artists around the globe.

“We wanted to give people a heads up: Things might not be as you expect them to be. This isn’t exactly the Tuscan, old-fashioned villa. Things can get a little funky in here,” Gilmore told Travel + Leisure.

Despite positioning itself as a countryside bed and breakfast, each of the 12 guest rooms and suites includes luxury amenities, including modern bathrooms, large, comfortable beds, complimentary minibar, and original artwork—including work by Andy Warhol.

The property itself boasts an expansive 12 acres of carefully manicured outdoor space, including a grotto pond, a produce garden (where most of the inn’s ingredients come from), a swimming pool, and a tennis court.

While hospitality reigns supreme, guests will also have a guaranteed seat at Francescana at Maria Luigia, which has been nearly impossible to come by—securing a seat at the Michelin-starred restaurant is one of the most sought after reservations in the world.

With just one seating per night, Bottura and Gilmore invite their guests to get up and walk the kitchen, chat with the team, and break down the barriers that often come along with high end Michelin-starred dining.
