A still from 1996 Iranian film 'Leila', directed by Dariush Mehrjui, showing this weekend at TK Park

Looking for something cerebrally stimulating to do this Saturday, 10 February? Why not take in the screening of Leila, the opening movie of the 2018 Contemporary World Film Series, which returns to TK Park at CentralWorld?

Considered a classic of Iranian cinema, the 1996 Persian language film was co-written, produced and directed by renowned filmmaker Dariush Mehrjui and features actress Leila Hatami in the titular role. Hatami rose to international fame as the star of A Separation, which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2012.

A stark but riveting domestic drama, Leila charts the relationship of married couple Leila and Reza (played by Ali Mosaffa). Both come from modern, upper class Iranian families. When Leila learns she is infertile, her husband is accepting of the situation. However, his mother isn’t and she convinces Leila that it is her duty to allow Reza to take a second wife in order to produce an all-important male heir. Leila is disturbed but agrees to her mother-in-law’s demands, much to Reza’s confusion. When he does marry again, the couple realise that what they have set in motion affects them both much more than they expected.

Supported by the Cultural Centre of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Leila will be shown at TK Park (8th floor of CentralWorld) on February 10 at 4pm,  following an introduction by Iranian ambassador HE Mohsen Mohammedi. Tickets cost 20 Baht and Iranian snacks and tea will be served after the screening.
