The musician, whose real name is Danupha Khanatheerakul, is bringing Thai hip-hop global with her raw lyrics, refreshing persona and hunger for social justice

Catchy raps, electrifying beats and a fierce dedication to social justice—these are what Thai rapper Milli has become known for. Born Danupha Khanatheerakul, the musician has been making waves in the music scene not only with her addictive tunes but her decision to be a voice for change.

The self-proclaimed K-pop fan started her career as a contestant on The Rapper 2, a televised singing contest, where the then-student council president impressed the judges with her acting and singing skills.

After signing with artist management company Yupp!, Milli debuted her first single in 2020 to rave reviews. Phak Kon (พักก่อน)—which means “calm down” in English—had a message of anti-bullying. Its music video has since amassed more than 90 million views on YouTube.

Following the success of Phak Kon, Milli sang about her life and dreams while challenging the definition of beauty in her second single, Sud Pang (สุดปัง)

In 2022, the rapper became the first Thai solo artist to perform at Coachella, where she ate a plate of mango sticky rice on stage, causing the sales of the traditional dessert to skyrocket. Due to its sudden surge in popularity globally, the Thai government even considered pushing for the dish to be listed as a Unesco Intangible Culinary Heritage.

Here are four more facts to know about the rising hip-hop star who has proven her ability to move people and trends through music.

She raps in multiple languages

Milli often showcases her linguistic abilities in her songs. For her second single, she rapped in a mix of Northern Thai, Northeastern Thai (or Isan), Southern Thai, Japanese and English. When asked what makes Thai hip hop different, she said it stands out from the language to topics covered; Thai hip hop typically incorporates multiple local dialects and focuses on topics specific to the country.

Creating music for a purpose greater than herself

“I’m not here to represent the conventional ‘Thainess’. I’m here to represent who I am as a Thai person,” said Milli in an interview with music and culture publication NME. According to the rapper, her goal is to show people the lesser-known sides of the local culture through her music. Her song, Sad Aerobic, for example, was based on the community aerobics dance sessions commonly seen taking place across the country.

Through her raps, she also puts the spotlight on complex topics, such as mental health stigmas, while offering solace and solidarity.

She hopes to work with Rihanna one day

Her dream collaborator is Barbadian singer-turned-entrepreneur Rihanna, who she is looking forward to seeing one day start recording new music again. But right now, she is appreciative as a successful K-pop fan, having worked with Korean rapper Changbin from Stray Kids for her collaboration single, Mirror Mirror, with fellow Thai rapper F.Hero.

She is planning a world tour

Currently a student, Milli says she has plans for a world tour upon graduation in a year. Aside from her iconic Coachella performance, she has taken the stage at multiple major events including Los Angeles’ Head In The Clouds Music Festival and Singapore’s Formula One Grand Prix.
