More than just a place to charge your electric car, Tesla’s Supercharger station also features a retro-futuristic diner and drive-in movie theatre that pay homage to Hollywood’s golden age

Diners and drive-in theatres were quintessential symbols of American culture in the 1950s and 1960s. They are less prolific now, but that will soon change.

Automotive company Tesla has received approval for a unique two-storey Supercharger complex that features its electric charging stations, as well as a diner and drive-in movie theatre. Based on renderings released of the complex, it will pay tribute to the golden age of Hollywood.

The concept was first suggested in 2018 by the company’s CEO Elon Musk, while the renderings were briefly shown in a Tesla 2023 Investor Day video.

The complex will be located on Santa Monica Boulevard, in the heart of West Hollywood, Los Angeles. It will have 32 Supercharger stalls and will be open for 24 hours for Tesla owners to recharge their vehicle while enjoying classic movies on two giant screens and diner-style food.

The diner and drive-in theatre concept is not new to Tesla, which previously opened similar facilities in other US locations including Las Vegas and Kettleman City in Kings County, California.

The Los Angeles project, however, is notable for its retro-futuristic architecture. It also reflects Tesla’s vision of blending the past and the future, and its ambition to create more than just cars, but a lifestyle and culture around its brand.

Timelines and budgets are undisclosed at this point, but Stantec Architecture is the listed architect with PCL Construction Services as the contractor hired to do the work.
