AI and big data are helping athletes and coaches improve their game, prevent injuries and optimise strategies. AI systems can monitor and analyse an athlete’s performance during training sessions and competitions.

Wearable sensors and cameras, for example, can be used to collect and analyse data on an athlete’s biometrics, movement and skills, turning them into actionable insights for coaches to adjust and optimise training methods and how an athlete can more quickly achieve their goals.

AI can be paired with augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies to enable athletes and coaches to train more effectively and safely.

Football team Arsenal, for example, uses immersive training regimes that allow young players to experience different match scenarios through realistic VR training environments. Meanwhile, AR helps overlay digital information onto the real sports environment, providing real-time feedback and facilitating tactical planning.

There is a host of potential applications for AI and the Internet of Things (IoT), a network of physical objects embedded with sensors and software that can connect with other devices over the Internet. These technologies can help sports venues improve safety and security, providing better services and experiences for fans and staff.

AI-powered surveillance, for instance, can detect and prevent security breaches, and a crowd sentiment analysis to gauge current mood and reaction, allowing organisers to take appropriate safety measures. Contactless solutions, such as contactless ticketing and payment systems, can also improve stadium operations and management.
