Get ready for some tequila, tacos and lively Latin music this week

Cinco de Mayo is a popular ocassion celebrated in many places around the world, although its roots lie in Mexico. The celebration of May 5 abroad is indeed very different than it is in Mexico. Many assume that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s Independence Day when it is actually the commemoration of Mexico's victory against French troops in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Cinco de Mayo was first celebrated the year after in California, in solidarity with Mexico. Years later, the day became an opportunity to celebrate Mexican identity and has remarkably spread to countries as far as can possibly be from Mexico, such as Thailand.

As Cinco de Mayo is this week, here are five places in Bangkok to get your fill of the celebration of Mexican history and heritage, via food, drinks and other fun festivities:

This cool new tequila bar on Sukhumvit soi 11 will host two different events to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Join their Jose Cuervo Margarita Masterclass on Saturday where you will learn how to make Mexican margaritas while tasting delectable bites of guac and tacos. Then join in on their Tunes, Tacos, Tequila event on Sunday, where there will be a taco bar full of meat and vegetarian options, as well as beers, cocktails and great Latin music.

Mexicano's Cinco de Mayo Fiesta is back! Join the party on Friday, May 3 at the Rembrandt Hotel where you will be able to feast on flavourful Mexican dishes, dance to the sounds of a live Latin band, drink til your drop and perhaps win prizes in a lucky draw.

One of Bangkok's best Latin bars, Revolucion Cocktail, is waiting for you this Saturday, May 4, with cocktails, tapas specials, music and special Mexican tacos by chef Sergio Velázquez from the popularLa Lupita Bangkok.

Located at 72 Courtyard in Thonglor, Touché Hombre will host its Cinco de Mayo party on Saturday May 4 with a Mexican smoked meat menu comprising items like short ribs with mole sauce, grilled prawn tacos with smoked salt margaritas and some special tequila cocktails. The venue also promises piñatas and good live music.
