Aesop’s Bangkok Offers A Plate-Smashing Greek Experience
If you’re a frequent at ThailandTatler.com, you’ll know the Saladaeng/upper-Silom area holds a very special place in our hearts, and gems like Aesop’s are one of the reasons why. Head down the shaded Saladaeng Soi 1, past Bitterman, and you’ll find yourself standing in front of a Greek taverna. Quintessentially Greek with a facade of blue and white, Aesop’s Bangkok is a second-generation revival of its original Sydney branch, which served Greek classics for over 25 years.
Upon entering, you’ll find yourself in a cosy dining space with stucco walls, dim lights and long tables meant for larger social gatherings. An ‘OPA!’ sign hangs in pink neon by the entrance, while large Greek columns and arches set a backdrop of tradition at the bar.
What really sets Aesop’s aside from all the other fine dining establishments in town is its party-inducing atmosphere. Every evening, guests enjoy ouzo and hearty plates as one of the co-founders takes the role of MC, sharing fun facts on Greek culture and inviting diners to get up and enjoy themselves to the music. This escalates later on when the entire restaurant becomes a dance floor and when diners are even encouraged to smash crockery. Following Greek tradition, guests are given plates to hurl at the floor, followed by shouts of ‘OPA!’
To help you get in the mood for some Greek-style partying, the bar serves signature cocktails based on Greek gods and goddesses. Go for the Zeus for a grape flavoured vodka and red wine infused option, and the Aphrodite for a sweet-bitter mix of .sparkling aperitif, ouzo and rosemary infused rum. For those who can’t decide, get a ‘cocktail of the day’ and leave it up to the talented bartender.
Food-wise, expect generous portions meant to share. Start your meal with a Deli Tray—an exciting assortment of classic Greek slides complemented with freshly-baked pita bread. Keep an eye out for the taramaslata, a savoury blend of fish roe, lemon, garlic, olive oil and vinegar. You can also never go wrong with hummus and dolmades, but our personal favourite here is the tzatziki. Greek yoghurt with cucumber, garlic, lemon, mint and a satisfying amount of dill, it’s refreshing, light and goes nicely with any of the breads.
For the main meal, opt for a light entree with the Hortiatiki Greek Village Salad—a fresh combination of tomatoes, cucumber, an abundance of feta cheese and kalamata olives, topped with oregano and olive oil. The Cheese Saganaki is also divine. Expect an intensely concentrated dish of kevalograviera cheese imported from Greece, pan fried to a perfect sizzle and topped with figs and lemon. For a meat dish, the Kofta is an aromatic dish of grilled minced beef and lamb, served with herbs on house-made pita bread and tzatziki. For non-beef eaters, the Chicken Souvlaki is a good alternative, boasting tender meat. End off on a sweet note with the signature Greek Yogurt Affogato, which gives you a strong Greek coffee poured over sweet white chocolate mousse with yoghurt ice cream and pistachios.
