"Fresh Meat"

Have you noticed how chefs seem to be getting younger each day? Previously by the time a chef got to the point where he could head a kitchen he would already be close to middle age. Today these culinary wizards are sometimes just in their 20s and winning acclaim for their creativity. Well last week I met a talented chef who is not only young (although no longer in his 20s) but also extremely fit. In fact so fit that he even has a six pack! Bet you haven't met a chef who works out regularly and has a super trim and toned body. No, I did not get to see those tight muscles in person but I sneaked a peek at his Facebook posts, which reveal all.

Chef Zahner has joined Tables Grill at the Grand Hyatt Erawan as chef de cuisine where it is hoped his experience at Michelin-starred restaurants including with the celebrated Alain Ducasse in Paris will help to take the restaurant to new heights. I was invited to try his new six-course degustation menu and must say he does French cooking with a flair that speaks of influences from Asian flavours. And that is absolutely how I like my French cuisine.

No Whining If It's French Wine

Another food event was a lunch organised by Maison de Grand Esprit. Well, actually it was more of a wine event as the host was launching its French wines. Australian company Treasury Wine Estates (which counts the popular Penfolds in its portfolio) last year unveiled its new French brand with wines created from multiple regions: Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhone and Provence. At the event held at Brasserie 9 we got to taste six variants from the La Mysteriale and L’Etre Magique ranges paired with food. Winemaker Sebastien Long was there to introduce each one and as you can expect, it was a long lunch. Good thing that was a Friday and it would have been perfect if I didn’t have to go back to work after. But no such luck. My pick from the wines is the L’Etre Magique Bourgogne 2016, a Burgundy red made mainly from pinot noir and some gamay that is light and fruity.

Qeelin Afternoon Tea

Also originating in France is Qeelin, a jewellery company that is now based in Hong Kong known for its designs encompassing elements of Chinese mysticism and is now part of the Kering Group. Local distributor Sette Peccati is holding the Qeelin Afternoon Tea together with St Regis Bangkok with cakes and sweets inspired by the jewellery’s designs until 31 July. Attending the tea’s opening event were socialites such as Onchuma Durongdej and Sorat Amatayakul who were welcomed by Sette’s Dr Thitiporn Sanguanpiyapan and the hotel’s Klaus Christandl.

From France to Italy

—With a stop at the opening of the Italian Week 2018 at Central World with the participation of leading products from that country. Presiding over the event was Italian ambassador HE Francesco Saverio Nisio together with Sudhitham Chirathivat of the Central Group.

Next was Korea

—With the launch of Chosungah Beauty 1989, a popular K-beauty company with three brands: Ver 22 Chosungah, 16 Brand and Wonder Bath by Vibes. The woman behind all this is creative director Chosungah, who was at the event at Paragon Department Store to introduce her products and conduct a make-up demonstration. The brands are imported to Thailand by Pailin Umpujh of M-Curated.

And finally, a taste of Laos...

—With the opening celebration of Rosewood Luang Prabang. Held at Nai Lert Park Hertige Home, the party was hosted by Sonia Cheng, CEO of Rosewood and Rena Udomkunnatum, managing director of Elysian Development which owns the Luang Prabang property. With 23 luxurious tented villas, this exotic resort reflects French-Lao architecture at the World Heritage site. I bumped into Thomas Harlander, who I had last seen in Seoul at the Park Hyatt there who tells me he is now the general manager of the soon-to-open Rosewood Bangkok. Just another of the heavyweights that are opening in Bangkok before the end of this year together with Waldorf-Astoria, The Edition and Hyatt Regency.D6.jpg
